Anxiety presents differently for many different people. Some of the most common symptoms include increased heart rate and heart palpitations, shortness of breath, perspiration, dry mouth, difficulty sleeping, fear and uneasiness, difficulty being still or concentrating, muscle tension, and headaches. Somatic therapy looks specifically at what is occurring in the body and encourages somatic self awareness. Memories and traumatic events can store in the body. By processing emotions and taking note of our self-protective physical responses, we can increase our own tolerance and ability to deal with unpleasant body sensations.

Practicing mindfulness allows us to be more cognizant of our environments and attentive of our interactions and relationships. Moreover, mindfulness promotes relaxation by encouraging the engagement of the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for our stress responses, in its practices.
